am i being a bad sport?

i play co-ed softball--have been for about 15 years in the same league. so, my team faces the same teams, with various changes through out the years.

this year, one of our teams has a transgendered person, a girl now, but still has many obvious male traits, the broad shoulders and thick neck and narrow hips. AND a pretty hot bat (no pun intended) now, this being berkeley and all, we are used to ...whatever, it's all about letting your freak flag fly freely, right? but it sucks to have to face a team that essentially has 3 guys in a row in their line up. especially when it's a struggle to find enough girls so that your team doesn't forfeit.

it's causing a bit of a buzz and i think it may have recently gone to a formal complaint. yesterday one of the blues said he recognized the "girl" from last seasons thursday nite (all guys) league.

so far...it's just been a subject that my team mates & i have bitched to ourselves about. should i stir it up more? ask our captain to join in the formal complaint?

Hmm. This person still has the physical characteristics of a man, and used to play in the men's only league. My completely unprofessional opinion is they should be considered a men's league player and the team should have to have three non-men's league players on their lineup to not forfeit.

Enforcing this is a whole can of worms, though, and is it worth it for what's supposed to be a fun, relaxing, and social pastime?

Would it still be as much of a problem if that team usually lost?

My completely unprofessional recommendation is to let it slide, knowing that they have somewhat of an unfair advantage but you'll train hard and beat them anyway. You can always take steroids if you have to.

I'm seeing a new Adam Sandler movie coming out of this.

If their driver's license says they are a girl, then they should be allowed to play as a girl.

Breathe in... think about all this person has to go through in their life... now think about the fact that those troubles have now spilled into a pastime sport that they play simply to have fun.

Let them play as their drivers indicates and resolve yourself to working just a bit harder when you play against them. It will make any wins against them all that much sweeter!

oh- that goes both ways... if the license says it's a guy then they should have to play as a guy until it's changed.

yeah. it's true that we are all just doing it for fun. but it's fun because it's supposed to be somewhat fair, as in fairly equal. still, how sucky to have something you love taken away because of your sex. if someone told me i couldn't snowboard cause i had boobs...i'd cry like a girl.

true nuff. Maybe the people that are up in arms about it, are the ones that are taking what you guys do too seriously. That takes the fun out of it and it is sad that someone would be discriminated against and their team might suffer for a persons gender choice. hmm

Alva, you are so lucky to have free time to engage in extra ciricular activities. I envy you. I suggest, just enjoying the game. Unless that team always wins, then make a fuss.

ah! i forgot to check in..

            guess what?

            we WON!!!!

i had been off for surgery and since i couldn't play i didn't go (call me a bad sport, but really...it's SO hard to just watch when you want, need to be out there playing with your team). i'd set up a substitute and got weekly recaps of the game. the league was really tight for awhile, and we were in the playoffs and my dr. released me to play on the day of the playoffs. so i just showed up. i felt great and we were all ON and we beat them. not by a little, by a lot!!

            YAY!!!!
