i finally got a new (to me) computer and am reloading programs and stuff.
i was using yahoo messenger but now that i can, i'm thinking of using a more comprehensive messenger that can add users that not only use yahoo ids but also msn, aol, maybe more (do people still icq? ) whatcha got people?

I've tried Trillian, etc. There's also Gizmo which LiveJournal adopted for their IM (no idea if people actually use this or not) as well as the other protocols.
I mostly just run Yahoo Messenger though. Lots of Yahoo stuff sucks and the messenger is not particularly light on resources, but almost everyone I talk to is on it at this point and I actually like the look and feel. OTOH, I like a lot of Google products, but Gtalk doesn't have anything persuasive going for it.
I finally joined Twitter recently. This is billed as "microblogging" instead of messaging, but is pretty similar except that the default is to broadcast to all your friends; you can also send to one friend. You can use it from the twitter.com page or download a variety of client programs.
